# Third-Party Audio Notices

This file documents the provenance of the **audio content** (instrument voices /
sounds) shipped with Studio4All, as required by plan §2.H. For the
software components (Tone.js, VexFlow, the transcription engine, etc.) see
`THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md`.

## Recorded instrument library

Studio4All includes 231 recorded MP3 samples (44.4 MiB), selected from
[N. P. Brosowsky's tonejs-instruments](https://github.com/nbrosowsky/tonejs-instruments)
at revision `622c2f1c32c8cfce4158ddc3eb26e518ddef37e5`.
The sample collection is distributed under **CC BY 3.0**; its loader code is MIT.
The full sample license is in `LICENSES/instrument-samples-CC-BY-3.0.txt`.
Per-file source URLs, hashes and sizes are in `assets/instruments/provenance.json`.
The upstream musician/source credits are preserved verbatim in
`assets/instruments/sample-source-info.txt`.

The original MP3 bytes are unchanged. The player transposes the nearest recorded
note between sample pitches and applies gain/envelopes. These are compact,
single-layer previews, not a complete multi-articulation orchestral library.
Twelve catalog choices use recordings. The other seven clearly say
"Synthesized preview". Source sites: https://www.karoryfer.com/karoryfer-samples,

https://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/.

Desktop playback uses packaged files offline. The web build serves these same
files from its own origin on demand. Recordings are never uploaded for playback,
transcription, or separation. Maintainer asset downloads happen at build time.

## Fallback voices (original synthesis)

The following original synthesis recipes remain available for unmapped instruments
and as a visible fallback if a recorded instrument cannot load. Tone.js is MIT.

The drum kit is a **basic synthesized percussive voice** (pitched drums/toms),
not a sampled acoustic kit. Its recipes live alongside the others in
`src/features/playback/presets.ts`.

## Loop library (plan §2.I)

The bundled loop library (`src/features/loops/builtinLoops.ts`) is **original
MIDI content composed for this project** — never derived from Apple Loops or any
commercial loop library. Each loop stores inline note data plus provenance
metadata (`creator`, `license`, `source`) and a content fingerprint (`hash`).
Because the loops are MIDI (not audio), they carry no third-party audio
obligation and adapt to the project tempo automatically.

**No audio loops are bundled yet.** The loop schema supports audio loops
(`kind: 'audio'` + an asset id), but adding them requires original / CC0 /
public-domain recordings (see the policy below) and — for any tempo/key
adaptation claim — real time-stretch / pitch-shift (Phase 3 Flex), which does
not exist yet. Until then the loop browser says plainly that only MIDI loops are
available.

## Lesson content (plan §4.B)

The bundled interactive lessons (`src/features/lessons/builtinLessons.ts`) are
**original exercises or public-domain music** — never third-party licensed
content without an explicit attribution (enforced by
`src/features/lessons/builtinLessons.test.ts`). Like the loops, lessons are
tick-based MIDI/notation (no third-party audio recording), so they carry no
audio obligation. Each lesson stores a `license` (`original` / `public-domain`),
and any non-original lesson carries an `attribution`.

## Recorded audio (user content, not shipped)

Audio that the user records or imports (microphone/instrument recordings, imported
`.wav`/`.mp3`/`.flac`/`.ogg`/`.m4a` files) is **user content**, managed under the
user-data directory and never redistributed with the app. It carries no
third-party obligation for the project; users are responsible for the rights to
material they record or import.

## Policy for any future bundled audio

If bundled audio is ever added (for example a loop library — plan §2.I), it MUST
be **original recordings, CC0 / public domain, or permissively licensed with
attribution**, and each asset MUST be listed here with its source, license, and
attribution (full license text under `LICENSES/`). Commercial sample libraries
are not permitted, and nothing may be fetched at runtime (the app is fully
offline — see `docs/SECURITY.md`).
